Contemporary Change
Organisations are currently adapting at an unprecedented pace, often leaving teams exhausted and confused, and leaders bordering on burnout. One of our clients recently said, ‘we know we can’t engage everyone in everything – but how can we give them a fighting chance of absorbing even a bit of what’s to come?!’ The current landscape of accelerating digital evolution (revolution?), market instability, competitive pressures and already fatigued workforces demands a reset in how we approach change. At OneStep we encourage leaders to rally around 4 key activities.
Fortify purpose and strategy
Be really honest about your core - your non-replicable competitive advantages, the secret sauce that makes you special. Double down and reinforce this core and don’t sweat the small stuff. Help your people know what to focus on, and give them permission to let the rest go.
Put people at the heart of transformation
Take a behavioural insight-lens to all design and planning activities (yes, even your technology investments) and embrace what it is to be human at work – connection, joy, creativity, kindness. We can enjoy (and grow in) times of transformation, if we approach the work in a disciplined way.
Build lasting change muscle
Most teams we work with are struggling to juggle both BAU and transformation... but change needs to be ‘just the way we do things around here’. Build more agile and adaptive ways of working into your strategy, planning and decision-making. Support leaders with more knowledge, habits and systems to lead and adapt to change as BAU.
Just take one step at a time
Spoiler alert: there’s no perfect way forward - don’t believe consultants who tell you there is! Create bite-sized (digestible) chunks of change. Gather insight, listen, learn and pivot (by choice not reaction). Ultimately have courage – feel the fear and move forward regardless.
